Interview
1. Did you always want to be an author?
It never really occurred to me until I was in the unique, and terrifying, position of not having anything to read. That was back in my twenties when I was working as a volunteer in Africa. We were living in this really remote village on the banks of Lake Kariba in Zambia. It was an absolutely stunning place but there was a real shortage of books (this was way before ebooks.) The nearest supply was the British Library in the capital city, Lusaka, and that was a boat ride and a long drive away. I was totally addicted to reading (I had a book-a-day habit back then) and I ran out quickly and really suffered. In the end, I decided my only recourse was to write my own. And so I began.
2. What is your favourite childhood book?
The Silver Brumby, or The Weirdstone of Brisingamen or...
3. How many hours a day do you spend writing?
Lots and lots. Actually, when I’m writing a new book, I normally aim for 2-3 hours or 2000 words a day. But I usually have other stuff to do, like plotting or edits or marketing, so I normally work a full day.
4. Do you have a dream cast for your book?
Scarlett Johansson for Daisy and Alex Skarsgard for Fergal
5. Which book would you have with you on a desert island?
I think I’ll go for Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels Trilogy, because it’s nice and long and I’m happy to read it again and again.
