Okay.. back before Katniss Everdeen and her arrows, the nearest we got to a warrior woman was Sheila McCarthy. A typical 80's teen who falls through a portal to another world.
Landing in the kingdom of Arren, Sheila falls in with a band of warrior women who ride unicorns. Because she has no idea of how to get home and because they think she's a sorceress, the troupe let her ride with them and train her to be a warrior. Throw in a handsome boy warrior and we're away to fantasyland, and there's an evil empire to overthrow (at least in the first 3 books).
Written by 4 different authors, this set of slender books became my obsession throughout my teen years. I found the last two first and then spent years hunting down the other four. Sheila is a great protagonist. She trains with the barest minimum of angst and becomes a capable warrior. The books are great fun and fairly easy reads. True they could be more adult but I love them as they are. And how can you go wrong with unicorns. It's great to read about female warriors that don't only think about boys and while Sheila fancies Darian, it isn't her only thought.
Excellent books that I still read today.
