Aemi has been a slave in the 'Village of the Rocks' for her entire life. Yearning for the freedom that her mother told her about in stories, she saves every penny she has in order to someday escape. Her plans are interrupted by an invasion from the sea and she goes from one set of slavery to another. Taken with another boy from her village, Aemi tries to find a way free from the very different world she finds herself in.
Of Sea and Stone is a fascinating read. It's fast paced and the characters are wonderful. Aemi is a focused individual with a strong personality and while there are hints of romance, it is not the focus of this book. I love heroines who plan and think and aren't 'special'. Aemi felt awesome and was a good reason why I loved this book.
In addition to Aemi, the secondary characters feel fleshed out, from Lissa to her father and beyond... they all seem realistic with their own fears and hopes.
There isn't much I can say about the story without revealing some major spoilers, so I will conclude with the following. I read this book in 1 day and immediately purchased book 2 from Amazon. I enjoyed it that much.
