Okay, I enjoyed Cinder, there were a few moments that I rolled my eyes at the main protagonist, but all in all I really enjoyed the book. So with the enjoyment of Cinder fresh in my mind I started on Scarlet and if anything I liked it more.
First we have Scarlet, a girl with a raging, bad temper (who appeals to me and my own bad temper) a hunt for a Grandmother, a 'wolf' character who is sexily scary and a better view of Cinder. Seriously, despite a desire to not pick up the call, Cinder improved massively in this book. We get a couple more characters and it's a bunch of prison-breaking, illegal street-fighting, train-jumping awesomeness.
So, why 4 stars and not 5. It's really down to Kai and his 'kingly duties'. I understand that the Lunars are 'special' and must be bowed down to, but I rolled my eyes at his 'solution' to Levana at the end. By the time all of what Levana had done to the World had been finished with, I'm really shocked that the World hadn't gone to war. It may be niggling, but in reality, that kind of action would have provoked an extremely negative response. I know it's sci-fi but when the rest of the book feels rooted in real reactions, this bit dragged me out of it.
But that aside, I loved this book. Can't wait to dive into Cress.
