I thought that there was a great deal of potential in this story that was vastly underused. The ideas were good, but none of them were expanded upon. The characters needed a bit more to them and I didn't get a full feeling of the relationships.
I liked the idea that she was a powerful witch who was could save the world, but the idea wasn't given much airplay. We are briefly introduced to her magic then the plot skips several years and we are given no sense of why she's still completely incompetent.
Constructively, I would urge the author to not include pop culture references in anything she writes, unless the book relies on it. Pop culture references will date your book faster than anything else. At one point, the main character goes on a rampage about Twilight, it works now because Twilight is a big thing.. in ten years time it may not be.
I genuinely feel that a wonderful book is in here and this is why I've given it two stars. There was some great insights with Caleb and some good ideas. It needs a great deal of rewriting to bring that out.
