The Healer revolves around Hope, a teenager in a small town who has a secret. Hope has the ability to heal people, a power she has had for most of her life and which she uses to heal people at the local hospital. Her life outside of this is fairly boring until two very different and attractive guys turn up at her school.
Let me say right off the bat that I liked The Healer, the main character was interesting and most of the supporting cast were really great. I loved the fact that she had a power and she was willing to explore the aspects of that. I also loved the fact that her father was actually in on the secret. I also enjoyed the attempts to tie in Japanese mythology.
What I didn't like however, was the romance. Yes I know that insta love tends to crop up in YA, but that wasn't the reason it bugged me. The primary love interest Tie (which is an awful name btw) ignores every single one of her boundaries and pushes himself on her from practically their first meeting. She is understandably freaked out by most of what is happening to her and he not only rides roughshod over her but I can see no reason for her 'fuzzy feelings', and love interest no. 2 also manages to treat her as a thing. I could see that it was supposed to be destiny and all that, but it felt so false. They were both dicks who still managed to get her going for no discernible reason.
I will admit it was gripped by the book however and the manly men did grow on me, so I will probably buy the sequel.
