Sometimes itâs an idea Iâve always wanted to write. Sometimes it hits me at the weirdest timesâwhile in the shower, grocery shopping, driving. Sometimes the whole story comes to me in a flash and I have to write down the highlights before I forget it. I also find inspiration on Pinterest. I love beautiful photography of placesâcastles, gardens, fantasy art. I use that to help inspire me.
2. Do you have a dream cast for your book?
I would love to see this story come to life on the screen. Hereâs who I envision as my leading characters.
Aoife (EE-fa) â Anna Kendrick
Sean â Chris Pine
Fiona â Cate Blanchett
Niall â Robert Carlyle
Cian â Jason Issacs
Deaglan â Ian McKellen
Liam â Sean Bean
3. How do you handle writerâs block?
I think every writer has hit writerâs block. There are a couple of things I do. I get up and walk away from the computer and let my mind rest. Iâll do something else creative to let the story percolate in the background a while. When that doesnât work, I like to get out a spiral notebook and start free writing. That usually leads to an epiphany or two about the story and then I can get back to it.
4. What inspired you to write this book?
This book found me. I was at a dark place in my writing life when I started it and had no idea it would end up in a full-length story following these four characters. I signed up for a 7-month long workshop to help rediscover the joy of writing. Thatâs how Wizard King was born. It was with one basic question: What if there was a portal in a trunk? The story evolved from there. I rediscovered how much I loved writing and storytelling.
