In the 80's and 90's, one female author dominated the sci-fi/fantasy shelves. Anne McCaffrey wrote about dragons and brain ships, telepaths and crystal singers and she was extremely prolific. My personal journey into Anne McCaffrey's world started when I was 14 and still at school. Dragonquest was the book I picked up from the shelve and soon I plunged into a world where dragons flew and thread fell.
That simple book led to me having a shelf full of Anne McCaffrey books. The Pern series was never my favourite, I much preferred the telepathic/telekinetic characters of the Tower & Hive and Pegasus series. I also loved the first two books in the Crystal Singer series.
There were and are some problems with Anne's books. Her romances seem to be vaguely abusive or slightly creepy. She also was unable to end a series without completely 'fixing' the universe. But I still love her books.
I would recommend that any of my readers seek out this mistress of sci-fi/fantasy. Even if you cringe at the romance, please check out her work.
