\n Excerpt from Rubyâs\nChoice book one of the Ditch Lane Diaries
\n
\n
\n
\nRuby sat close to Reed\non the drive back to Murfreesboro. There was a wintry chill in the air, and the promise of snow lurked in the late\nOctober sky. The two-lane highway had double yellow lines with no shoulder. As\nthey approached the stretch of the road called Dead Manâs Curve, Ruby looked up\na second too late to see a deer run out of the woods and dart into the highway\nin front of Reedâs car.
\n
\nâReed, watch out!â she\nscreamed.
\n
\n Reed was driving too fast to react and tried\nslamming on his brakes, but he hit the deer. That was when everything seemed to\nhappen in slow motion. Ruby heard the brakes screech\nand smelled burning rubber. She heard the violent\ncrunch of metal as the car skidded in the gravel toward the ditch. She felt as\nif they were slowly floating through the airâand then, all at once, everything\nsped up, as Ruby heard the deafening grind of metal, and the car flipped on its\nside. Rubyâs head hit the windshield, and then there was nothing.
\n
\n****
\n
\nReed woke to a coppery\ntaste in his mouth and the smell of burnt rubber and antifreeze. His head ached\nwith intense pain. It took about a second for him to remember what had\nhappened. He looked down and found Ruby pinned underneath him. His car was\nflipped over on the passenger side. A surge of adrenaline pumped through his\nbody as he lifted himself off Ruby and gently shook her.
\n
\nReed lifted her from\nthe floorboard and held her in his arms. âRuby, honey, wake up. Are you okay?â\nThere was no movement from her. He screamed, âRuby, baby, can you hear me? Please wake up, Ruby!â His hands shook as he\nfelt for her pulse. Thank you, sweet\nJesus! Sheâs alive!
\n
\nPeople screamed from\nsomewhere outside, from the sound, there mustâve been at least a dozen people\nat the scene. He heard sirens in the distance as people approached the car.
\n
\nBrent yelled, âReed,\nhelp is coming. Weâre going to try and place the vehicle upright. Can you hold on to something?â
\n
\nReed braced himself\nwith one arm so he wouldnât fall on Ruby. With his other arm, he tried to\nsecure her next to him, gently, so she wouldnât hit the dash when the\nothers flipped the car upright.
\n
\nBrent hollered, âOn the\ncount of three: One! Two! Three!â
\n
\nThe car flipped upright\nand bounced like a buggy. Reed cradled Ruby in his arms.
\n
\nBrent opened the\ndriverâs side door and started to pull Reed out. Reed screamed, âWait. Iâm not\nleaving Ruby. Has anyone called an ambulance?â
\n
\n Reed glanced up to see the distraught look on\nBrentâs face when Brent first noticed Ruby. And then Brent fell backward,\nnearly falling. Ruby lay unconscious, almost lifeless in Reedâs arms.
\n
\nBrent regained his\nbalance by placing his hand on the roof of the car. His voice quivered, âReed,\nI can see the ambulance lights now. The state trooper is here. Hey man, youâre\nbleeding pretty badly.â
\n
\nNearing the brink of\nhysteria, Reed cried, âJesus, I donât care about me. I care about her. Iâm\nstaying here with her.â
\n
\nSomeone handed Brent a\ncouple of blankets, and his hands shook when\nhe gave them to Reed. Brent said, âYou\nneed to place this one over Ruby and the other one around you. The paramedics\nare here.â
\n
\nEquipped\nwith two gurneys, one for Reed and the other for Ruby, the paramedics pulled\nReed from the car. He begged, âPlease get Ruby first. Iâm okay. Get\nRuby out of the car.â Reed was out of his mind with worry. He tried to punch\none of the paramedics as they were pulling him from the wreckage. He screamed\nand cried out, âRuby! Iâm here, darling! Iâm not leaving you, baby! Iâm right\nhere!â
\n
\n Ruby lay unconscious.

\nExcerpt from Annaâs Way\nbook two of the Ditch Lane Diaries
\n
\n
\n
\nJerry was the first-person Anna saw when she walked into the Glennâs house. He leaned against the\nstairwell with his arms crossed over his chest wearing a navy-blue suit and\nblack shirt. Jerryâs eyes locked with Annaâs. The molecules in the air charged\nwith electricity, kicking up a furor of fire flooding Anna with the warmth of\nhis love.
\n
\nJerryâs face lit with a smile,\nand it felt like seeing the sun for the first time in years. Her pulse raced, and her fingertips tingled with power.\nAnna swiftly looked around the room and didnât see any sign of Rachel.
\n
\n
\n
\nAnna made a beeline to Jerry. âI need to talk to you,\nalone. I have no idea how because Rachel pops up everywhere. Will you please\ntalk to me in private?â
\n
\n
\n
\nJerry leaned close to her ear and whispered, âWhen and\nwhere?â
\n
\n
\n
\nAnna sighed with relief. That was all she needed to hear.\nâSandy intends to feed Rachel cocktails and suggest she go outside to smoke. We might have a few minutes then, okay?â\nJerryâs eyes turned a shade darker. He undressed her with his eyes, and she\ntrembled, leaving her knees feeling weak. She grabbed onto his hand and held it\ntight. âI feel the same way about you.â
\n
\n
\n
\nAnna noticed Rachel walking out of the kitchen. She quickly turned to Brent, who was talking to George and Lizzie.\nAnna placed her arm around Brentâs waist.
\n
\n
\n
\nBrent smiled down at Anna and circled his arm around her\nwaist. He whispered, âAre we playing a game?â Anna nodded.
\n
\nOut of the corner of her eye,\nshe noticed Jerry tensed and his jaw muscles clenched. She looked down, and Jerryâs right hand balled up into a fist. Hot dog. Jerryâs jealous.
\n
\n
\n
\nAs the afternoon wore on, the neighbors and church folk\nbegan to leave until the only people left were the Glenn family and a few family friends, including Brent, Sandy, Jerry, Rachel, and Anna.
\n
\n
\n
\nSandy plied Rachel\nwith cocktails all afternoon. Sandy winked and nodded to Anna when she led\nRachel outside to the backyard. It was show-time. Anna whirled around the room\nand spotted Jerry near the front door watching her. Anna nodded, and he walked up the stairs. Anna\nglanced across the backyard once more and made a mad dash up the stairs. She\nmade the top step and started down the hallway when Jerry opened Rubyâs old\nbedroom door and pulled her inside.
\n
\n
\n
\nAnna threw her arms around his neck, and he circled her waist. Searching his eyes, she said, âI\ndonât need a man to complete me. I need love to complete me, and itâs the love\nI have for you that makes me whole. Iâve made a ton of mistakes, but thereâs\none thing I know for sure. You, Jerry Douglas\nMcDaniel, are the love of my life.â
\n
\n
\n
\nJerry held her face with both hands. âAll it took was one\nlook into your eyes, and I knew I was still crazy for you, all of you, and I canât go another minute without making\nyou mine.â
\n
\nAnnaâs eyes widened with\nsurprise. âWhat are you saying?â
\n
\n
\n
\nJerry brushed a strand of hair behind her ear and\ncaressed her cheek with the palm of his hand. âI didnât sleep last night. All I\ncould do was think about you, about us. I donât have any proof, but I think\nRachel may have deleted your messages and thrown away your letters. I didnât think you loved me anymore, Anna. I canât marry\nRachel. God forgive me. I donât mean to hurt Rachel, but I donât love her. I\nlove you. I always have.â
\n
\n
\n
\nJerry leaned in only inches from her face. The warmth of his sweet breath and the spicy scent of his\ncologne made it hard for her to breathe. His loving eyes searched hers, saying everything and nothing. Annaâs\nadrenaline kicked in high gear. The clarity she had\nat this moment was razor sharp.
\n
\n
\n
\nAn emotional force unleashed between\nthem as Jerryâs warm lips made contact with hers,\nand they slammed against the wall. His lips were gentle and rough, alternating\nbetween kissing and sucking her top and bottom\nlips. His tongue licked the corners of her mouth,\nand he gently traced the outline of her lips before he plunged inside. His knee pushed between her thighs, and her heart skipped a beat
\n Jerry\nscooped\nher up in his arms, carried her over to Rubyâs bed, and lay her down. He traced\nhis fingers along her jawline, down her neck to the swell of her breasts. Jerry\npulled back slightly, looking at her as if she were a lost treasure he had just found. He covered her with a\nblanket of kisses and gently ran his hand over her breast and squeezed, and she\nstopped him.

\n
\n
\nâJerry,\nwe canât do this, not here in the Glennâs\nhouse. As bad as I want to make love to you right now, I canât. I love and respect them.â
\n
\n
\n
\nJerry\nbrushed his fingers over her cheek. âAnna, Iâm sorry. The long and short of it\nis, I damn well near died when you left. But now I feel like my heart is going\nto explode with happiness. I donât want to let you go.â Anna choked back her\ntears and reached up to run her fingers through\nhis thick hair.
\n
\n
\n
\nJerry\nkissed her again. âIâm sorry, Anna. I shouldâve never agreed to marry Rachel.\nIt wasnât fair to her or you. Will you forgive me? I know you may think Iâm\nnuts, but letâs run away. I want you to run away with me. Iâve always wanted to\nmarry you. Always. Will you run away with me?â
\n
\n
\n
\nAnna\nkissed him hard and hugged him with all her strength. âIn a Tennessee\nheartbeat, I will. Iâm staying at Rubyâs. What time will you come for me?â
\n
\n
\n
\nHe\nrolled onto his side, propped on his\nelbow. âIâm not sure yet. It could be late. Will you wait for me? I promise Iâll be there. I have to tell Rachel, and itâs going to get real ugly.â
\n
\n
\n
\nAnna\ncouldnât take her eyes off his face. âYes, Iâll wait for you. Iâll be ready. If\nyou like, I could go with you to talk to\nRachel.â
\n
\n
\n
\nJerry\npulled her on top of him and ran his hand down the curve of her spine. âBad\nidea.
\n
\nSheâs\njealous about everything, especially you.\nItâs my mess, and Iâll clean it up. I\nhave to go. Rachel will be looking for me, and I donât want to create a scene\nhere. I love you, Annabelly.â They sat on the side of the bed. He hugged her\nagain. âIs this real? Are you really here\nwith me?â
\n
\n
\n
\nShe\ngently touched the side of his face. âIâm here.â
\n
\n
\n
\nJerry\nwalked to the door. He cracked it open\nand paused before he strode back over, pulled her up into his arms, and kissed\nher one last time. âDamn, I missed you.â Then he left, leaving her standing\nnext to the bed. Her heart hammered faster than a horse running the Kentucky\nDerby.
\n
\n
\n
\nAnna\npressed her fingers to her lips. She couldnât believe it. Jerry was coming for\nher tonight. Anna stepped over to Rubyâs vanity, picked up a hairbrush, and\nbegan to brush her hair. She opened a tube of coral lipstick and applied it to her lips.
\n
\n
\n
\nAnna\nwent over to the door and peeked outside. She didnât see anyone, so she quickly\nwalked down the hall and into the\nbathroom.
\n
\n
\n
\nAnnaâs\nskin flushed pink. It wouldnât take a rocket scientist to figure out what she\nhad been doing. Anna began to breathe in\nand out slowly to settle her racing pulse. She looked around the drawers in the\ncabinets until she found Leeâs makeup case. Anna tried to make herself presentable\nbefore she went back downstairs.
\n
\n
\n
\nAnna\nhad waited for ten minutes before she\ndescended the stairs. On the bottom step, Sandy grabbed her hand and dragged\nher outside. Anna followed Sandy around the back of the house. Sandy stopped\nand turned to face her.
\n
\n
\n
\nSandy\nthrew her hands in the air in apparent frustration. âHave you lost your mind?
\n
\n
\n
\nExcerpt\nfrom Sandyâs Story book three of the\nDitch Lane Diaries
\n
\n
\n
\nLucâs Testament held the keys\nshe needed to bring down his network in more places than Nashville. Sandy had\nenough ammunition to disrupt Lucâs empire on earth. She held the power in her\nhands. Sandy wrapped the large book with a black velvet cloth and secured it\nwith a leather strap.
\n
\nSandy felt weighed down by\nLucâs Testament as if she carried an enormous burden on her back while walking\nslowly to her Corvette. She placed the book in the back storage with her Ditch\nLane Diaries master copy, then slid behind the wheel and cranked up the engine.\nA stern Baldric appeared in the passenger seat, arms crossed and jaw clenched.
\n
\nâYou canât stay mad at me\nanymore. Youâre right. Lucâs Testament has enormous power and contains\neverything we need to bring him down. Nailing Cole Steele will be a bonus.\nBefore we head out to Everglade Farms, I need to stop at the library and make\ncopies of the pages mentioning Cole. Iâll keep the original book with me.â\nSandy grabbed Baldric by the face and kissed him on the mouth.
\n
\nFlames of desire shot up her\nspine as the kiss lengthened, and she melted into Baldricâs strong arms. Sandy gazed\nat him through heavy lids, and a slow smile came to her lips. âYou have\nsparkles floating in the air all around you. Golden sparkles. What is that?â
\n
\nâDonât ask or we wonât make it\nto the library or Everglade Farms, and Iâm already in deep enough waters with\nSeneca.â Baldric held her hand and kissed her fingertips.
\n
\nSandy turned up her CD player\nand began to rock back and forth to the music from Electric Light Orchestra.\nShe teased him and sang out the words, âYou like me, you love me, you want some\nmore of me.â She giggled and pulled out onto the highway.
\n
\nâYouâre some kind of woman.â He\nlaughed.
\n
\nâYup, the kind that wants\nsome.â Baldricâs response to her kiss made her heart flutter with excitement.\nIt was the middle of February, and her palms were sweating.
\n
\nEverglade was thirty miles\nsouth of Nashville. Driving down I-65, Sandyâs thoughts raced back to Lucâs\nTestament. Sheâd followed leads on Cole for months. Not a single solitary soul\nwould even speak to her off the record. Everyone was scared to death of him.\nBut with the book in her trunk, Sandy had all the answers she needed to nail\nCole to the wall and couldnât wait until her segment hit the airwaves.

\nAfter graduating Middle Tennessee\nState University, I landed a job as a broadcast consultant at the ABC Affiliate\nin Nashville, which led me to open an advertising agency. Over the years, I\ncreated many campaigns for my clients and still enjoy developing marketing\nmaterials.

\n
\n
\n
\nWriting is a source of creative\nexpression but also releases stress. I know many authors that would disagree\nwith me. But writing takes me to a place where anything is possible, and\nfiction takes me to places made of dreams.

\nIâm happily married to the love\nof my life and my best friend, KJ. We have two gorgeous sons whom I love and\nadore more than life itself. I love to laugh, and my husband keeps me in\nstitches!
