Interview
1. Where do you get your ideas?
I tend to take inspiration from anything and everything. In the case of the Andersons, it was some random conversation with a co-worker, the gist of which I can’t even recall, but the idea of a married couple who also kill people grew from there.
2. Do you have a dream cast for your book
I can’t say that I do. I would say I can see this much more as a series on say, HBO or Showtime or Netflix than a movie, since a series would really provide the running time to explore everything.
3. How do you handle writer’s block?
Depending on what’s causing the block, I have different methods. If it’s being stuck on where to go, I’ll read over what I’ve written and then usually put on some music and just think. If it’s burnout, I’ll take a day or two off and just binge-watch a favorite series in order to recharge my batteries.
4. What inspired you to write this book?
Originally, I thought of the Andersons (the couple) as something much more humorous—almost like slap-stick comedy. The idea of these two people trying to retrieve the bone of their victim from a puppy in the middle of a dinner party or deciding they couldn’t murder someone because they looked too much like their very nice neighbor who bakes them cookies just cracked me up. Eventually, it took on a much darker tone and morphed in to what it is now.
5.What’s the hardest part of being an author?
For me, I would say it’s not having enough time to write everything I want. My want-to-write list is probably a mile long and constantly growing.
