City of Bones is the first book in the 'Mortal Instruments' saga. Clary Fray is a normal fifteen year, who is drawn into an age old war between angels and demons. Whilst this has been done before and the plot and antagonists bear a startling resemblance to Harry Potter, City of Bones is quite well written and enjoyable.
The characters are relatively fresh and not YA stereotypical, though Jace is far too sarcastic and 'witty' to feel like a real character. Clary is sufficiently clueless, particularly over Simon's feelings, but she isn't particularly annoying with it and she does seem to actually be able to do something, rather than stand on the sidelines.
I also loved the twist at the end, it was inspired and all kinds of awkward but I appreciated the writer's guts for taking that route.
All in all, I enjoyed the book and will certainly be reading the next one.
